Finding student accommodation when campus is full.
When Kerrie came from China to study in the Frankston area, she wasn't sure where she was going to live. Campus accommodation was full, so she broadened her search and found somewhere nearby while she waited for a campus room to become available.
Arriving without a place on campus.
Finding somewhere to live is one of the biggest practical jobs involved in moving somewhere new to study.
It can be particularly difficult for international students who may be trying to organise accommodation before they properly know Frankston, the surrounding suburbs or the different housing options available.
That was the situation for Kerrie, a student who came to Australia from China.
Kerrie wanted to live on campus, but says campus accommodation was full when she needed somewhere to stay.
Rather than simply waiting for a campus room, she started looking at other accommodation options that could work in the meantime.
According to Kerrie, university staff suggested that she look at Flatmates.com.au as another way of finding a room.
I wasn't sure where I was going to live because campus was full. I was told to have a look on Flatmates, and I found somewhere close by for $320 per week with all the bills included.Kerrie — student from China
A local room gave her time to wait.
Kerrie's search eventually led her to a room located close to where she needed to be.
She says she paid $320 per week including all bills.
For Kerrie, the room didn't need to replace her original plan of living on campus. Instead, it gave her somewhere to live while she waited for campus accommodation to become available.
That distinction can be useful for students who find themselves in a similar position.
Your first accommodation in Frankston doesn't necessarily have to be where you remain for your entire course. A suitable room elsewhere may give you time to settle into the area and continue checking your preferred accommodation.
One search. More than one accommodation option.

She later moved on campus
When campus accommodation became available, Kerrie moved into the university accommodation she had originally wanted.
Shared accommodation
Flatmates.com.au is one platform students can use to search for individual rooms and shared accommodation around Frankston and surrounding suburbs.
Visit Flatmates.com.au →Broaden the search without giving up your first choice.
Kerrie's experience doesn't mean every student will find the same price, location or arrangement. Shared accommodation varies considerably between listings.
What her experience demonstrates is that a full campus doesn't necessarily mean a student has run out of accommodation options.
Students can investigate university-managed accommodation, dedicated private student accommodation, individual rooms in share houses and short-term accommodation where appropriate.
Looking elsewhere also doesn't mean abandoning a campus application. An alternative room can act as a bridge while you continue waiting.
“Once a room became available on campus, I was able to move there.”

Don't rely on one option
If your preferred accommodation is unavailable, start investigating alternatives while continuing to check your first choice.
Compare the total cost
Check exactly what a weekly price includes. Rent, utilities, internet and other costs can vary between accommodation arrangements.
Keep checking availability
Accommodation availability changes. A temporary option can give you somewhere to live while you wait for your preferred accommodation to become available.

I find that this accommodation really reasonable. There is own fridge in your room with quite large size that you can store your daily food. The AC is already equipped inside which you do not need to worry about the temperature. Finally, the best thing is that it is around 4 minutes away from the accommodation to the uni.Posted on Google![]()

My experience at MPG LODGE Is amazing. I’ve been a student studying there for just about 1.5 years now, and I wouldn’t say anywhere else. It’s a 2 minute walk to my uni, and so convenient as it’s nearby to cafes and shops. I would definitely recommend!!Posted on Google![]()

Great lodge for students to stay while they are studying. Price is very reasonable and the lodge has everything you need for a great experience as a student. The kitchen has all the cleaning supplies and a dishwasher. The main TV in the lounge has all the streaming services available, the rooms have AC and everything is kept clean and tidy. It is very close to Monash uni and walking distance from everything you need. The owner is very friendly and responds promptly to any questions. I would absolutely recommend this lodge if you are a student and need a great place to stay for a reasonable price!Posted on Google![]()

Was struggling to find an accommodation near my Uni as I wasn’t able to get a spot on campus. Thanks to MPG Lodge, it made my schooling experience much more convenient, given the 5 min walking distance from my campus. Room and facilities here are great (washer/dryer, cooking utensils, netflix all included and cleaning service once a week) Easy access to transportation and shopping malls and landlords are really friendly too! Highly recommend this place :)Posted on Google![]()

I'm also a renter here, and I love it. The host is extremely helpful and friendly. I've asked them lots of questions, and the host happily answers them. The facilities are great. I love the coin service here. It really comes in handy when I have no coin to use the washing machine. I have no complaints about living here.Posted on Google![]()

I send my daughter here while she was studying at Monash University Peninsula Campus. Firstly, thank you to the management. They were professional and easy to deal with and made sure that I felt comfortable as a parent. My daughter loved the accommodation, it was always kept clean and tidy, it was a very short walk to her campus to study and she made some great friends. Once again thank you Peninsula Student Living, we highly recommend this to any other students at Monash Peninsula.Posted on Google![]()
